Squid Fishing – Amed, Bali, Indonesia
Unlike the younger kids using simple lines and hooks, Gede uses an actual fishing rod with a plastic lure. He’s fishing for squid but hasn’t caught any so far. Much like the younger kids fishing method, he too casts the line, pulls it in slowly and hopes that somewhere along the way a squid will bite. “For selling?” I ask. “No”, he says, “for eating.”
About half an hour later we meet again on my way back along the shore. He shakes his head. “Sun come up, squid no hungry.” He packs up his things and wanders back home. There’s always tomorrow.
