Kacek and his coconuts – Ubud Area, Bali, Indonesia
Like his father, and his father’s father, Kacek makes art out of coconuts. He spends his days, with family members like his brothers and cousins, carving intricate depictions of various shape and size into the hard coconut shells using simple tools.
Some of the simpler patterns might take him a day or two, the more complex ones like the one depicted here, can take him up to more than a week. It is the holes specifically that are hard to carve out. Sometimes people come to him to bring their own patterns. This one costs about $25 for a weeks work.
